Cannon beach is one of my favorite places to photograph weddings and elopements. With its beautiful beaches, stunning cliff views, lush forests, and sweeping sand dunes, the photo opportunities seemingly never end. Whether you are having a big wedding at the Surfsand Resort, or eloping on Indian Beach in Ecola State Park, your Cannon Beach wedding photography is guaranteed to be filled with gorgeous memories that will last a lifetime.

Nice to meet you

HI,

I AM MARIA

Documentary digital and 35mm film Cannon Beach wedding photographer

I have been photographing weddings for over a decade, and have had the pleasure of documenting hundreds of couples. Oregon is my home, and I never lose inspiration in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. My background is in photojournalism, so I always take a documentary approach to weddings. I primarily shoot digital, but I also offer 35mm film photography as well, for a special artistic touch.

WEDDING & ELOPEMENT LOCATIONS

  • The Beach by Haystack Rock: The good news is that elopements and small weddings with 50 guests or fewer do not require a permit on the beach, as long public access is not blocked, and no structures are put up. However, if you are having a wedding with more than 50 guests, or you plan to put up chairs or other structures, a special use permit can be acquired from Oregon State Parks. The permit costs $150 for up to 50 guests, and is an additional $1 per guest after that. Additionally, liability insurance is required to obtain a permit.
  • Ecola State Park: This park is a short distance from town, and has the same usage requirements as the beach near Haystack Rock. Engagement sessions, elopements, and small weddings with 50 guests or fewer (and no chairs or structures) are free. There is a day use fee of $10 per car. The park includes the beautiful Indian Beach, wooded hiking trails, and stunning cliff views of Chapman Point.
  • Surfsand Resort: For bigger and more traditional weddings and receptions, Surfsand Resort is available right on the beach. In addition, Surfsand provides their own catering for those interested in the convenience of having everything in one place.

PLACES TO STAY

Being a tourist destination, there is seemingly no shortage of cute places to stay within Cannon Beach, however, below are a few of my favorites.

  • Surfsand Resort: Surfsand is a one stop shop for many people planning a wedding. Staying in the same location as your wedding can be a nice convenience.
  • Inn at Haystack Rock: This is a personal favorite of mine. These adorable cabins a block from the beach include kitchen areas and access to a shared courtyard with a fire pit.
  • Airbnb: The most picturesque and private option is an Airbnb. Many of the homes near the beach are short term rentals with unique personalities.
  • The Retreat on the Beach: For a more rustic option, The Retreat on the Beach offers cabins just a few blocks away from the beach.

Things to consider

  • Timing: When planning for your Cannon Beach wedding photography, it is important to leave enough time to capture all the beauty of the area. I recommend you carve out a minimum of 2 hours for portraits if you wish to have a mix of beach and woods. Ecola State Park and Haystack Rock are not too far from each other by car, but exploring both areas will take some time.
  • Shoes: Either wear comfortable shoes, or bring shoes to change into while walking from location to location. I find myself and my couples walking a great deal on the wedding day, often on long stretches of sand or beach rocks.
  • Weather: The summer months in Cannon Beach are usually sunny and mild, but most of the year Cannon Beach is overcast, with a near-constant drizzle of rain. For many, this is part of the appeal of the Pacific Northwest, but I still recommend you bring layers, and even pack an umbrella you might not mind being photographed under.
  • Sunset/Golden Hour: During the sunny months, the most magical time for romantic portraits is while the sun is setting, during “golden hour.” To get the most out of your photos, I recommend planning on reserving time for portraits at this time. In the middle of the summer this can be much later in the day around 8 or 9 pm.
